Governance and Corporate Policies

Environmental Protection Policy

Terra Balcanica is committed to protecting the environmental value of the regions where we operate and maintaining good stewardship for the long term. Our goal is to prevent, or otherwise minimize, mitigate and remediate the effects that our operations have on communities and environments. This includes impacts on biological diversity and ecosystem services that are relied upon by surrounding communities for natural resource use as well as ecosystems held within avoidance, buffer, and offset zones, or other non-operational zones. It applies to all lands and waters utilized by the Company or for which Terra Balcanica may have responsibility.

Terra Aims To:

1. Minimize impacts on ecosystems and related natural resources to reduce residual impacts by applying the mitigation hierarchy principles of avoiding, minimizing, and rehabilitating.
2. Plan our actions to mitigate biodiversity impacts.
3. Actively seek and implement collaborative opportunities for enhancing long-term stewardship of natural resources through an inclusive stakeholder approach.
4. Predict residual impacts, if any, and implement offsets as necessary to meet regulatory requirements, or to otherwise manage associated risk.

Terra Controls:

Hazard identification and risk management

  • Develop internal performance criteria when government regulations are absent or insufficient to ensure protection of important biodiversity features and ecosystems.
  • Assess biodiversity, natural resource values, and ecosystem at existing and new sites. Update theses assessment in response to changes in local conditions.
  • Design and implement baseline studies
  • Identify, characterise, document, and evaluate all known potential risks and impacts, including cumulative and indirect impacts to biodiversity and natural resources.
  • Develop, maintain, and implement mitigation plans for all significant risks and impacts to important biodiversity features, priority ecosystems services and related natural resource availability, based on mitigation strategies and in consultation with relevant stakeholders and affected communities.
  • Evaluate and document all known potential impacts to important biodiversity features, priority ecosystems services and related natural resource availability.

Monitoring, measuring, and reporting

  • Implement a monitoring program using metrics that track changes in identified important biodiversity features.
  • Investigate and take appropriate actions when material deviations from impact predictions are identified
  • Develop participatory monitoring programs with affected communities, as appropriate.
  • Arrange for an independent review of the mitigation plan by qualified external expertise
  • Report on site level mitigation performance to relevant external stakeholders regularly if significant risks or impacts to important biodiversity, ecosystems or natural resource availability are identified.
